a weekend of knowledge sharing and strategizing - October 29th - 30th - The Factory, Bristol

Open cast coal mining, nuclear power, tarsands, fracking, biofuels - the drive to extract every last reserve of fossil fuels and to find other ways to feed energy intensive economies is resulting in ever more desperate and crazy developments.  Never has it been more important for activists to understand the energy system and what is driving new developments.  This is the basis for effective resistance and for finding creative alternatives.   The idea for this weekend came out of a workshop of SW activists at the Earth First! Summer Gathering.

Saturday 10.30 - 4.30

The aim of the day is to build an understanding of how the current energy system works (the language, the infrastructure, the organisation) and then to look at plans for its future developments comparing main stream and alternative future scenarios.  Where are the cracks in the current system that might provide opportunities for resistance and creation of alternatives? What would an energy system designed to meet social need with minimum environment impact look like?  Using games, exercises, discussion - we can explore these issues.

Sunday 10.30 - 3.00

Linking energy campaigns - looking at the big picture and developing resistance strategies. Developing and using new tools for giving a wider understanding of the politics of energy.  This is intended to be a more open agenda where we can turn our ideas into plans for action.
